11th Annual Student Cultural Arts & Literary Program 
Celebrates Black History Month - February 2015

 

In keeping with our tradition, we cordially invite all students to participate in our

2015 Black History Month Art Exhibit.

Our 2015 theme is:

 

DEFINED BY FASHION

RECOMMENDED SUBJECTS 

Students are encouraged to discover their own meaning of "fashion" through their

artwork while exploring Black Culture. All pieces should allude to the unique trends in fashion, style, and spiritual traditions of the African, African-American and/or Caribbean cultures. Some examples of artwork may be:  

 

  • Fashion sketches

  • Urban fashion

  • Black religious attire

  • Runway themes

  • Fashion influenced by Black music

  • Time periods (ex. Harlem Renaissance, 70s, 80s, 90s)

 

Each student should write a paragraph and/or poem that describes their artwork. They may write about something they were inspired by, what fashion means to them, or a trend in black fashion that they particularly like. Select students will be invited to read their passages during the reception and will receive special recognition for their extra effort. 

 

About the Program
The Stamford Center for the Arts in partnership with Picture That Art Consultants, a fine art consulting firm, launched a student cultural arts and literary program in January 2005. The purpose of the program is to educate the students and community at large by promoting diversity and cultural awareness through art.  In addition, the program provides a mechanism for students to exhibit artwork in an art gallery and network with professional artists for mentoring purposes.
 

Who is eligible to participate? 

This program is open to all students who reside in Fairfield County, Connecticut; and are currently enrolled in: Grades K-12; Community College, a 4-Year Institution or Technical School.   
 

Is this a contest?

All participating students will be recognized and receive a "Certificate of Participation". The artwork will be exhibited during Black History Month, February 2015 and all participants will be invited to attend a community reception along with their school principals, organization leaders, art teachers, families and friends. This program is open to the public and is free of charge.
 

What media are eligible? 

Interested students should use their creative abilities and imaginative approach to create artwork using watercolor, charcoal, pencil, acrylics, pen, paint, fabric, collage, crayons, mosaic, scratch art, iPhone Photographs, iPad Art or a computer generated image. 
 

Are there artwork size limitations and how should the art be labeled?  

1.  The artwork can be sized to best meet the parameters of each class.  If the size exceeds 36 x 48 inches, please request advance approval as we'll need to allocate space to install.
2.  Each student's name, school, grade and/or community organization and the theme the art reflects should be listed on an index card, and attached to the artwork with a paperclip (not glued) as this will serve as our identification label.

 

Where should the artwork delivered? 

The artwork should be delivered to the following address by the deadline:

In addition, we ask all art teachers to take responsibility for ensuring that the students and those associated with them are invited to the art reception.
 

When is the deadline?

1.  Picture That distributes the guidelines on Monday, November 10, 2014.
 

2.  Art Teachers confirm their intent to participate, via email to fineart@picture-that.com or by calling 203-977-8203 by Monday, January 5, 2015.

3.  Art Teachers submit artwork to Picture That on Friday, January 23, 2015, between the hours of 9am and 4pm, located at 1266 East Main Street, 7th Floor, Suite 700R, Stamford, CT.
