Waterside School ART NIGHT!
ART NIGHT is an opportunity to showcase artwork by Waterside School students and Connecticut artists to the Waterside School community. The Connecticut artists participating are Stanwyck Cromwell, E. Diann Cook, Karene Thames, and Eddie Nino. Beginning at 6 PM, there will be an introduction of these artists to the community. From 6:15pm to 8pm the students will participate in a mini-workshop in the classrooms where they will work with one artist to create their own works of art.
Diann Cook, born in New York City, is a visual and vocal artist, educator, and youth advocate. She received her B.A. and her M.S. from Central Connecticut State University. Ms. Cook's visual concentration is in acrylic painting, drawing, mixed media, and collage. She is the creator and co-founder of a successful youth art company for Greater Hartford area students. Cook provides artistic consultations and workshops for youth and adult group organizations. Cook has worked and displayed her art in numerous city and community agencies and has exhibited her work throughout Connecticut. Her workshop will focus on mixed media art. The students will create two or three dimensional small pieces using assorted colors of acrylic paints, glue and construction paper. Cook believes that we should strive for appreciation of all God’s children.
Stanwyck Cromwell is a Guyanan artist who migrated to the US in pursuit of an art career. He has lived and worked in Bloomfield, CT for the past thirty-seven years. Cromwell earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Applied Arts, from Charter Oak State College and also a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from the University of Hartford. HHHis memories of Guyana are rich and abundant, which are visible in his art work as the physical and aesthetic differences between the Caribbean and the US are quite prevalent. Saturated colors, patterns and textures show themselves in his collages, sculptures, paintings, and drawings. He is currently working on a series of mixed media collages, some of which are heavily textured. His workshop will focus on collaging, having the students use construction paper, glue, and other various items to create an expressive and fun piece of their own. One of Cromwell’s favorite collage artists is Romare Bearden.
Karene Thames enjoys making organic forms and functional art that are both beautiful to look at and a pleasure to use. She received her BFA from SUNY Purchase College in New York in 2012. She works with children and has done so for 25+ years in various positions; some being a school bus driver, an art counselor, a substitute teacher, and a program coordinator. She has also worked at The Boys & Girls Club and ROSCCO programs in Stamford, CT. Her MagnetiKSoul line of inspirational magnets and stickers features reproductions of her original artwork with words of encouragement and a focus on diversity. Currently, she operates 2 stores online; www.cafepress.com/magnetiKsoul for her graphic design arts, and etsy.com/shop/BelovedEnterprises for her sculptural, functional and 3-dimensional works. Thames’ workshop will consist of the students creating glow-in-the-dark jewelry using lanyard (gimp) and beads. Thames has three sons who she loves very much.
Eddie Nino is a professional fine artist and teacher based in Norwalk , CT. His rigorous academic training brings a traditional foundation but yet modern vision to both his work and art lessons. After studying for more than 10 years in New York City and Brooklyn, NY, he launched his career as a serious fine artist, and he continues to pass his knowledge that steams back from artists such as Frank Vincent DuMond and Ted Seth Jacobs to students of all ages. Eddie’s many honors and accomplishments include private commissions, solo and group shows, numerous awards from the tri-state area, and published artwork in the book: Classical Life Drawing Studio. In his workshop the students will be introduced to essential ideas about drawing and color while analyzing and observing a still life arrangement.
