Luis Alvarez

Luis Alvarez, painter, pianist and teacher, graduated from the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico obtaining a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance in 2000. In 2003 he moved to the mainland USA and earned a Master of Arts in Music from Hunter College of the City University of New York. Luis is a winner at the 2011 American Artist Drawing magazine cover competition. His work is currently featured in the 2011 spring issue.

Since his childhood, art and music has played an important role. Once in New York, he had the opportunity to study with German Diez, one of the most respected pedagogues and connoisseurs of the piano literature. Having also a great interest in the visual arts, he frequently visited NYC art institutions to learn about color, light, perspective, proportions, and infinite nuances from the great masters.

Having been a self-taught artist, he felt the need to study formally. In 2004 Luis enrolled at The Students Art League of New York in Nelson Shanks class. During this time, he developed a refined understanding of color and light which helped foster his own artistic language. Robert Alexander Anderson, one of the most distinguished portrait artists of today, has mentored and encouraged Luis's artistic career.

Luis works from his home on his own compositions and commissions. He also works as Music Co-Director at Saint Rose of Lima Parish in Newark and teaches piano at the Third Street Music School Settlement and privately in New York City. Luis currently lives in New Jersey with his pianist wife and his daughter
