Indira Bailey

Indira Bailey, born in Plainfield, New Jersey, is an extraordinary award winning artist, illustrator and educator. Indira attended Pratt Institute receiving a B.F.A. in Illustration and M.A. in Educational Leadership & Supervision from Kean University. Bailey’s work demonstrates her pride, talent and her genuine interest in showing her experience as an African American woman and her travels abroad in a positive light.

 

Indira's body of work covers several mediums: graphite, charcoal, acrylic but mainly oil on canvas. Even as a child, Indira knew she wanted to be a successful artist. Her goal was to illustrate the experience and daily life scenes of African Americans in a realistic and enjoyable venue.

She has received of a number of outstanding honors and awards, including two distinguished Fulbright Scholarships to South Africa and Japan. Ms. Bailey created a series of painting based upon her experience in South Africa titled, "Uhambo". She became the first recipient of the Inaugural South African Initiative Vision Award from Rutgers Graduate School of Education in New Brunswick.

 

Indira has exhibited her work throughout the tri-state area with many extraordinary artists. This summer 2010, her most recent art show was at the Medgar Evers College 40th Anniversary with artists, Izell Glover, Alethia Brown and Otto Neals. Ms. Bailey was apart the Medgar Evers panel discussion, "An Educational, Cultural and Community Perspective", with Danny Simmons.

Indira is very active in her community. She is apart of the Cultural & Heritage Commission for the City of Plainfield that give money to artists for programs in the community.

 

Indira began teaching in the late 1990's, inspiring children by introducing them into the world of art. Her goal was to promote the creative thinking process in today's youth.

 

Indira Bailey provides innovative art workshops for children and adults in the school and community setting. Ms. Bailey provides visual and cultural education that will flourish in the urban school and community environment. Workshops conducted by Ms. Bailey includes visual art, cultures influences, understanding the human anatomy, and art history. She is a presenter of the sold out "South African Beadmaking" workshop, at the Art Educators of New Jersey annual conference.

 

Ms. Bailey is currently projects working on an art educational book and a new series of traditional Yoruba Orisha paintings.
